Vinyl LP pressing. Reissue, originally released in 1960. In 1959, at the time of this recording session, Yusef Lateef was already approaching a new and more open form of jazz. A sophisticated, spiritual yet urban music form informed by non-western languages and cultures. Cry! - Tender is a deeply inventive, mostly contemplative album inspired by an original cosmopolitan vision of jazz and based on masterful playing from a bunch of solid jazz musicians including among others: Wilbur Harden - flugelhorn; Hugh Lawson - piano; Herman Wright - bass; and Oliver Jackson - drums, percussion. All under the direction of master of ceremonies Yusef Lateef on tenor sax, flute, and oboe.

180-Gram Virgin Vnyl Limited Edition - *(*)All Music *Down Beat. Although his main instruments were the tenor saxophone and the flute, Yusef Lateef was known for his innovative blending of jazz with Asian music. In addition to the oboe and bassoon (which are both unusual in jazz), he played various instruments. Lateef began recording as a leader in 1957 for Savoy Records, a non-exclusive association that continued until 1959. The earliest of his albums for the Prestige subsidiary New Jazz overlap his Savoy Recordings. Cry! - Tender was one of these early albums for New Jazz recorded during this early period of Lateef's music career and is the only session ever he recorded with trumpeter Lonnie Hillyer. 180-gram VIRGIN VINYL LIMITED EDITION.
